Works just fine if you renumber each disc individually (not a major imposition as renumbering is almost instantaneous). You also need to be sure that the disc number is filled in properly for sorting by track number to work.

A better way is to use ripper software such as dbpoweramp. It accesses a number of music metadata services. Usefully one of them is discogs which has a larger source of metadata than musicbrainz (which it also accesses).
