Android/SD card sync

Post by elcapitan »

I've previously been simply copying new music to my phone then letting MMA find it when I open it but it takes a long time to scan so I'm trying sync from MMW.

I followed the wiki article, connect phone, setup sync profile then perform SD card sync as it's faster. Upon completion I put the SD card back in the phone and opened MMA. Completely empty library, no songs, no playlists. So I let MMA scan, It's added everything I think.

My question is when I now add new music after this initial sync I'll be using USB sync directly to the phone. Will this sync method automatically update the MMA database or will it have to scan when I first open MMA after sync every time? I got the impression sync updates everything on the MMA database so MMA doesn't then need to do the painfully long media scan so I'm hoping this is just how the initial sync works?

Is anyone able to confirm this?

I've since tried to sync a single playlist of songs already on the device and it took quite a while because it went through adding the songs individually again instead of just copying the playlist file. Also afterwards when I opened mma that did a seach for an absolute age again.

I don't see the point in the feature if it doesn't update the MMA db automatically at sync. If MMA needs to scan after every sync I might as well copy the new music myself.

MMW updates MMA, but some scanning still takes place. It definitely is beneficial to sync MMW > MMA as you'll get more tags synced and can sync Play History back.

I don't really mind if it doesnt sync playback history, I would never use that. The only tags I need are synced without using MMW anyway. If thats the case I don't think theres any real benefit to using it, I only wanted to avoid the scanning that takes an age afterwards but it seems I can't avoid that. Frustrating. Files copy quicker through explorer. Bit of a shame.
