problem with Samsung Buds Live

This is a weird one. Brand new Samsung Buds Live earbuds paired with a brand new Samsung S21 phone. When playing MMA, the left bud stops playing if:
1. a track finishes and moves to the next one
2. you manually select the middle of a track
It starts playing again if you skip to the next / previous track. I have done all the unpair / pair / reset / reinstall / switch off and on again options. The ear buds work perfectly:
1. on the S21 but with the Samsung music app instead of MMA
2. on MMA on a Motorola phone
I have no idea where the incompatibility might be as this is somewhere in the mix of ear buds / phone / Android / MMA. Any ideas welcome,,,
