Can long file names cause problems?

Just want to make sure I'm not messing up my files. I finally have everything tagged and labeled how I want it. I saw the option to add to file name. So it now includes track#, title, artist, album, rating, and date.
Not entirely sure how tags work but if I mess up and start from scratch I don't want to track down all of that info again.
