Not sure if you posted the Album tag, or folder or filenames.

You have Auto-Tag from Filename and Auto-Organize Files to automate things, depending on the actual setup, they may work for you.

so they are in a folder but wanted to remove the 01 01 03 etc from the front of the folder name
but it wont let me auto tag the folder name which contains a couple of tracks

eg 01 - 2pac - Ghetto Gospel (folder name)
contains 2x tracks need to change the folder name
bare in mind i have a few hundred to change

If you're trying to change the Folder Name you'd need to use Auto-Organize Files instead.

Do you have files selected? If so, where are these files located?

Organise will do what you want, but it can be a bit daunting. In order to give you specific instructions, you would have to provide some more information, specifically:
  • The state of your data - do your files have attributes like artist, album and title populated? Or do you just have that information encoded in the filenames?
  • More complete examples of your folder/file structure - most people use Album as a folder but your folder name is acutally a song - what do you have as files under that folder?
Answering these questions will help guide you to using Organise reliably across your many files. I use it routienly becase my data is in good conditions and I've worked out which filename mask patterns get me the result I want. But - like a chainsaw - it can do a lot of damage if misused should be treated with care.

hi mat
is there a way to take a screen shot.

just having a play around with the organisation to see what is best
so basically i have about 9000 albums and at the moment have been putting them into folders
so like all now thats what i call music in a folder and genre in separate folders in a fashion,
then i have a folder with artists in but say some artists i have put all of there albums in 1 folder like elvis led zeplin elo madonna etc etc
then i have loads of artists with singles in a folder (as above) the folder will have eg. 01 barry white and in that folder it will have 2 0r 3 tracks which most have the artist and track name and artwork so wanted to remove the 01 02 03 etc at the front
of the album name so i can list them in artist name order then move them into the album folder
so say there where 3 0r 4 folders with called 01 akon-lonley then another akon single but without the numbers in front
so they would all be a list in alphabetical order so i could scroll down and move them into the corresponding artist album
i hope this makes sense

a screen shot would have been easier

In order to have Mediamonky remove a certain number of characters from the beginning of the filename, youy can use a mask as follows:

.\$mid(<Filename>,4,240)

the .\ keeps the same path as you had, ie places the new file back in the same folder. the $mid(<Filename>,4,240) part keeps all characters from 4th to 240th, and removes the first three.

Issue with this for you is that your filenames have inconsistent numbers of characters to be removed, so you would have to do it in batches selected for the number of characters you want to remove.

Once you create the mask, the organize screen with show you the expected results before you press OK at the bottom

You can also use windows explorer to sort by artist name. You just need to add the column "contributing artists" to the display. Then select as desired and relocate.

Thirdly, you can use windows search to isolate all file names containing an artist name anywhere in the filename, and then move those search results to the desired folder, without changing filenames at all.

If you use Windows Explorer to relocate or rename files, you might want to turn on Folder Monitoring in MM, and have it running in the background, so it can keep track of where your files went. Other wise you would have to rescan, and possibly lose playlists.

See the post at the top of the "Need Help - MMW5" forum, or click on https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=97733. Follow the instructions there.

No, unfortunately it does not make sense. If you're not going to use punctuation and careful phrasing then your request is just hard to parse, leaving many possible interpretations of what you are trying to achieve. So, have a go at getting a screen shot of how you want to set up your folders and then we can be more helpful.

In the mean time, I'd suggest using Rob's suggestion for the update-in-place mask for Organise - that will at least fix the leading numbers problem, but start small and get a feel for the process.

Cheers

Re: RENAME MULTIPLE ALBUMS

I think your terminology is confusing.

Your list shows "FILE" names with "01 - " in front One "file" = one track which could be a "single" or part of an ALBUM, in which case there would be several filenames.

What we would call a "folder" name is your "TEST" containing sub-folder "SINGLES"

Most of us place all the tracks from any one album into a subfolder named after the album.

You cannot paste a screen shot directly "on here".
This forum uses Bulletin Board technology which has limitations out of last century. The link to the MM help page shows how to work within those limitations to get a screenshot onto a post - that's not going to change even if you do ask the question again.

The answer that Rob S gave you will do this for your filenames. If you master getting a screenshot onto the forum, then you can give us a shot of your screen and we might be able to offer more specfic guidance to help you through it.
Daddynoob wrote: Thu May 09, 2024 12:46 am but each folder has a couple of tracks in and art work
Not a problem. The Organise function starts with selecting song files from the main list, and art files don't show in that list and so can't be selected and so won't get their filename changed. However Organise is smart enough to move graphics files to new folders if the result of an organise activity is to move all audio files to a new folder.
Daddynoob wrote: Thu May 09, 2024 12:46 am the other way someone mentioned looked complicated
Mediamonkey is powerful but that power is not possible without complexity. MM gives you a bunch of powerful tools with the flexibility to use them how you want. In order to use those tools you have to learn those tools. In order to learn those tools you have to focus your attention. So yes, it looks complicated - and some of remains complex - but each little bit you learn reduces the remaining complexity. If you don't engage with it then it will remain complex.

There are other tag management tools out there more intensly focused on tags and filenames (MP3Tag from recollection) which might offer a simpler path for you.

Cheers

have tried mp3tag but prefer mm5
am just about to back them up onto another external hdd and from there i will have a bit more play around just incase anything goes wrong
am just learning bits and pieces on mm5 and really like it.

if anyone has any examples of how they have organized there collection that would be great.
also i will using most of my albums to run on a digital jukebox so will possibly have to sort by genre

thanks again
