On a clean install it won't install to /MediaMonkey 5. But if it detects an existing /MediaMonkey 5 directory, it'll re-use it (so as to preserve all existing settings/addons).

Just running the 2024 installer now and for a portable install it defaults to C:\MediaMonkey in the dialogue box.

All previous portable installs default to C:\MediaMonkey 5 (which is where my current install is)

If I let it install to C:\MediaMonkey will it find my existing settings/db/skins etc?

Portable Installers do not tell the OS where they're installed, thus the installer is unaware of it. For Portable Installers you'll need to manually select the MediaMonkey 5 portable install folder to update.

So no, you did a clean install of MMW 2024 (if nothing was in the C:\MediaMonkey folder). You can delete this folder, run the installer again and install in the C:\MediaMonkey 5 folder to update (and keep library/settings).

I just downloaded and ran the installer like I always do, and ticked portable (like I always do). In all previous installers it preselects C:\MediaMonkey 5 as the default location. In this one it preselects C:\MediaMonkey.

I'll try browsing to C:\MediaMonkey 5 in the installer this time.

When I try to browse to my existing portable location C:\MediaMonkey 5 it fills in this path:

C:\MediaMonkey 5\MediaMonkey

Guess I'll have to delete the trailing MediaMonkey text.

Yes, you have to remove it.

Alternatively you can rename the existing MediaMonkey 5 folder to MediaMonkey so this is no longer an issue in the future. With MediaMonkey 2024 it will default to \MediaMonkey folder for install instead of adding a version like version 5.

Is there some easy way that we can change the MediaMonkey5 folder names in the user profile folders and the ProgramData folder for existing installations?

Also, for existing installations, the program name change has made things a bit messy. The image below is an example.

I have used the portable installation forever, the reasons are lost in the mists of time.

The new folder default makes sense from a Dev perspective but is a user-end PITA for all of the future reinstalls we'll be doing for the evolutions of the new version.

My plan for dealing with the Installer new default to <Drive:>\MediaMonkey without losing all my MediaMonkey 5 Settings is to:
  • Copy all of E:\Music Program Files\MediaMonkey 5 to a new folder in the same path,
  • Rename that to E:\Music Program Files\MediaMonkey
  • With the Portable option ticked, browse to E:\Music Program Files, which will add \Mediamonkey on OK, then install to that folder
  • Rename E:\Music Program Files\MediaMonkey5 to Mediamonkey5 OLD
Worked fine for me, but I needed a free 3.5GB for the copied folder.

Cheers
Matt

I did as suggested above and just renamed my existing portable install from "C:\MediaMonkey 5" to "C:\MediaMonkey" then when each new portable install is upgraded it will overwrite the old one but keep the settings/skins etc.

Sorry, forgot to state that one of my goals was to keep the original MM5 installation untouched in case I major problem required me to revert back to MM5.
But, given the amount of attention that the MM administrators pay to the forum and the activity of the devs in keeping updates coming, the chance of that is certainly minor.
