Question: If I have '[ ] Auto-Sync files from the device to the PC' checkbox unchecked, should MM even update the Played # ?

Yes--MM always updates playcounts. The config item in question refers to actual modifications to the file.

iirc, there's a bug to clarify this in a future version.
