shuffle toggle mapped to a key

I'd *really* like the shuffle mode (currently only a toggle via the GUI) to be mappable to a keyboard key or combination of keys.

This is already possible in the Hotkey options section. Set up a new hotkey with "Playback: Shuffle Tracks" as the action.

Any way to map that to a "special" media key on my keyboard - it has a dedicated Shuffle key?

Just hit that key when you're setting the hotkey.

If it doesn't take, then another app is blocking it from MM.
