Mediamonkey share + SAMBA or Windows share

Post by kosztyua » Sat Apr 30, 2011 10:28 am

Hi,
I have been using mediamonkey with a nas storing both database and music. After a few tries i gave up using the database with two different computer at the same time, because no matter what configuration i used with samba, i got write error in the second client to open the database, since the first locked it.
Once again the need for using it simultaneously came up, and for trying it i moved the database to a virtual windows server, keeping the music on the nas. Now it works perfectly, both able to open the database, locking it only for the second when it is updating it.

Any thoughts? I would still go back to pure samba, anyone managed to set up it correctly?

Ok this looks interesting and I would really like to see exact steps on how to set things up (Both cases) so that I can try replicate your issues. I know that I had no issues unless I do heavy work on both PCs.

Hey,
Since the post i found that even on the windows setup if one of the clients have the database open for writing for a long period (adding new files to library) it will cause errors on one or all of the clients.
As for the setup, it is quite straightforward, just following the guides (or not since it is more than trivial). For windows, selecting a folder, sharing it with the copy of the database in it. For linux, setting up a samba server and creating a share (or in case of nas, just creating a new share for it). And changing database settings in ini.
In case of windows share, there is not much to play with the settings. As for linux i hoped that opportunistic lock settings can help, but in all the cases starting a second client resulted errors and/or crash since the first would not release write lock.

On the SAMBA share you may see an option for nopslock or something like that. I'm pretty sure you want that to be set to off.

However, the big problem you're going to have is that each client is going to want to open a file handle on the database (and create the various journal files, etc.)

Likely as not you'll be able to share the music files but not the database because you can't have two clients accessing the same transactional database file (well, you can... but that way leads to corruption).
