Re: The Difference Between DLNA & UPnP

Post by dypsis »

With regards to explaining the difference between DLNA and UPnP.
I found good succinct definitions for them both.
UPnP is a set of networking protocols that manage communication among devices.

DLNA is a set of standards that uses UPnP for communication, but also covers encoding and generally managing media over networks.

Thanks to zuiqo for the definitions.

Sir,

Thank you for the explanation.
I am guessing I need to do both UPnP and DLNA.

Any suggestions about getting my MM4 player on the spare PC to play Music??

Can MediaMonkey on the other PC (the one you're controlling) also play files locally? MM > MM streaming works for me (tested with MM5 to MMW4).

Note that MediaMonkey uses UPnP as a term for DLNA as only DLNA Certified hardware/software can use the term DLNA.

Hi Lowlander

Thank you for asking.

MM4 plays on the Workstation and not on the Other PC.

When I log into Other PC with Tight VNC I can control Other PC. I can see the music files, but MM4 on Other PC cannot see music file.

Does this help??

Not really. You need to make sure that the other MediaMonkey can play files locally first when troubleshooting this problem. If both MediaMonkey's can play local files it indicated that they can play files (everything is setup correct audio wise) and that the files are accessible.

It's possible that in your setup the client MediaMonkey is unable to play which causes the problem you're experiencing when playing to it from the server MediaMonkey.

Sir

Thank you.

I tried to play music from the MM4 Panel on Other PC “Media Server” – nothing, the tracks just move from top to bottom and are greyed out in the process.

I copied a flac file from my Workstation to the other PC – I can play music.

I tried to play music using Workstation to Other PC…nothing the track just start greying out

Any suggestions???

Can you access the server MediaMonkey from the client MediaMonkey through Media Sharing in the Media Tree and play files that way from the server?

This is taking control on the client, instead of pushing from the server. This may show that there is a networking issue (like firewall blocking) between the 2 MediaMonkey's.

On the client (remote) PC go to Media Servers in the Media Tree of MediaMonkey. Browse to your MediaMonkey Server on the other PC and see if you can play this way.

Can you view files from the server, but it fails to play, or can you not see the files/browse the server?

Lowlander – thank you.

Very confusing….

In the middle panel on Other PC MM4, I can see music files that are on the Workstation. I cannot play these.

On the LHS under “Media Servers” I can see Other PC (the one we are trying to play to) and another PC that has no media file. But No Workstation.

Got me totally confused.

Any error message when you attempt this?

Only if the port of the Server is set to 4000 will MediaMonkey see its own Server, otherwise it's hidden as you don't need to see the files from your own Server as they are accessible in the Library directly.

Lowlander – thank you again.

No error messages.

I have not touched, nor do I know how/where to change the port. I do not know what port it is.
