[SOLVED] Unable to sync with Samsung S4, device not detected in MMW

Post by Pathduck »

Hi,
I've used MMW to sync music to my phone for a long time, but it's stopped detecting the device, maybe this is caused by something in the latest update.

The devices won't show up in MMW, and neither in Portable Device Sync in the options.

The device shows up in Windows Explorer, and I've tried to disable AV as well.

I can check that the WMDM drivers are loaded using Process Explorer, and there's a separate thread running the d_WMDM.dll.

Any ideas what can be done?

Hi,
How S4 is seen in explorer? Have you checked if maybe S4 plugin is disabpled on Portable Devices list (Tools -> Options -> Portable Devices)

Thanks for the reply. In Windows Explorer, the S4 just shows up as regular, as a Device, see screenshot:

In Tools > Options > Portable Device Sync I just have this below, I think d_WMDM.dll should be sufficient for the Android Sync?

If there is a need, I can run Process Monitor, but what should I look for in the log?

I'm using the latest final, 4.1.25.1895. I had a look at the support article, and I belive I've done the relevant things there, but I will try again. I always make sure it's unlocked and in MTP (Media) mode.

Do I need to have MM Android installed for Sync to work now?

No, MediaMonkey for Android is not required for sync.

Hi,
From picture it looks like your device is connected in Charging only mode (Default). Please follow these steps (Click on Image to enlarge).

Hi Peke.
Unfortunately the S4 has only two modes:
Media Device (MTP)
Camera (PTP)

I use MTP when connecting to Windows. I've also tried PTP but it's the same there.

I'll try to reboot the device now. EDIT: Reboot didn't change anything

I'm really at a loss what to do here, but I'll take any advice, as long as it doesn't involve a factory reset.

Hi,
Try to reinstall Samsung Drivers from https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/ot ... or-windows you should always select MTP as PTP is for pictures and is very old protocol used in first gen cameras.

If you try to access device in explorer do you see the files?

Hi Peke! I did not install that, but it gave me an idea. I looked in the Device Manager, found the device under Portable Devices and chose to Update Driver, but instead of automatic I chose "Pick a driver", then chose one of the two same-named drivers available. Then suddenly the device changed to a proper "Portable media device" icon in Explorer, and MMW was able to find it... I have no idea why, as by what Windows was saying, I was already running the same driver, but there were two drivers with the same name "MTP USB Device".

Now it works. Damn, I should've thought of that at the start, but I usually never have device driver issues in Windows 10 these days.

I was afraid it would be another nail in the coffin of planned obsolescence ...

Thanks for the help and tips!

Hi,
Ahhhh, Windows and its quirks. Don't you love it.

I Guess you have never had an issue with MTP (PlayForSure) Driver before and/or struggled to install PlugNPlay (commonly called "PlugNCry") driver in Windows 95.

Glad we sorted this out.

Happy Monkeying!
