iPod Classic Problem

I'm sorry if this is a repost. I'm having a lot of trouble navigating this newsgroup.
I got a new iPod Classic 7th Gen. I'm running win 7. I was able to sync my iPhone.
But I can't get my new iPod to sync. The problem may be at the system level.
The system sees the device but asks to format it before it can be used.
Any help would be appreciated.
