Is moving database to a network location still not recommended?

Post by Vladimir »

I would like to be able to use Mediamonkey on 2 different PCs and need to be able to share the database (for updating, not only reading the database). Is this still not really recommended?

I have read some posts from a few years back that mention database corruption is quite likely if database is on the NAS?

My other idea is to just copy over the db file on the occasions where I want to use the other computer, and back again when finished. Any other ideas???

I'm not sure about database corruption, but a (shared) database on a network share can be a lot slower especially when you have a large database file.

Sharing the database would only be needed if you plan on editing on multiple PC's. If you just need playback on additional PC's you can use Media Sharing: https://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index. ... ervers/4.0

For MediaMonkey 5 there is a Media Server in the works (also would work with MMA) that would allow for a network shared database: https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=31

I have 60,000 tracks, and database file is 200mb. I presume that is "large"?

Yes, I am wanting to edit on both PCs. One of them will only be used occasionally when I want to sit down for a few hours and make use of the multiple monitors. So would you see any issues with moving the database file temporarily as per my idea above? (The music is stored on the NAS so the path is the same).

If you're using UNC Paths (not Mapped Drives) I don't think there is an issue with moving the database, but if you don't have simultaneous access network access shouldn't be a problem either. You can leave the database local to the PC you most commonly use and network share it to the other PC.

Backups are always a good idea: https://www.mediamonkey.com/support/ind ... ey-library
