Mediamonkey in dos?

Post by wallstreetwalker »

is there a way to get MM to work without windows, only using MS DOS

if not,
what is the oldest windows i could use. 3.1,95,98 ?
or does anyone know of a minimalistic windows version i could use.
the smaller the better, it should just get MM working

the lowest supported version is probably Windows 95

But why would you want to use that? Can't you use some Windows Xp they run on palmtops (and the new origami) and such things?
Extensions: ExternalTools, ExtractFields, SongPreviewer, LinkedTracks, CleanImport, and some other scripts (Need Help with Addons > List of All Scripts).

Microsoft is working on a version of Windows XP for legacy systems. Unfortunately they just announced today that this will be delayed till late 2006.
Anyway there are ways to make Windows XP lighter. You can take off the graphical theme and animations. Uninstall certain applications like MS Messenger etc.

@wallstreetwalker
What are the system specifics you are trying to run this on?

If your technically inclined and don't mind experimenting with reinstalls, you should try nlite which helps you build custom slimmed down/slipstreamed windows install cd's.

i've got 2 older pc
one running windows 98 (runs rather slow) 128mb ram
one running windows 95 (it's a bit older) runs smooth, i guess also 128 mb ram.

they aren't used anymore, so i might as well try some stuff out with them.
but i'm not really sure what to do:

i really would like to try some linux distro (and try amarok), but i also want to use mediamonkey on it.
i know of some small linux distros, but a small windows.

can i use windows mobile on a pc?

or has anyone ever tried this: http://www.litepc.com/

Memory will be your main bottleneck. You check to see if you can add/upgrade the memory for a few bucks.
The Windows XP for legacy systems will possible work well for you. You might want to search online for more specifications for this OS.

Linux of course would work as there are some very light distros available. Your main problem will be that MediaMonkey is Windows only and that Amarok is still in early development stages.
But if you have a faster system with MediaMonkey for managing your library you could run linux and some other player on the old machines.

hey,

ik think i will try this

install a linux distro: probably damn small linux

build a lite windows XP with either bart PE or nlite.
(which one should i use?), bartPE should only need 64 mb ram, so that's ok! (+ it's free). 8)

with a dual boot.
