Song Length questions

Post by thefaceman »

Awhile ago I posted a question about Song 'Outro/Intro', but I have encountered a 'new' issue related to this topic.

I have a song that has the 2:17 in the Length column, but the song KEEPS PLAYING playing until 2:29.

My question is WHY? And how can I see the REAL 'length' of a song?

This is related to my original question, I have some songs that have a Length of 2:29, but would end @ 2:17 and just go to the next song and not play the remaining :12 seconds.

A reply suggestioned that a 'output plugin to "Remove silence at the beginning / end of track', but I cannot seem to locate that option to disable it.

My question is really about HOW the Length value is 'calculated' in MM. I want the 'Length' file to play ANY 'audible' portion of the file and also tell me there is :12 of blank silence in the file. It would be REALLY great if I could 'edit the file' so that the silence did not exist in the first place.

Tools > Options > Output Plug-ins and configure the enabled Output Plugin. Not all Output Plugins have this option. Also disable Crossfade (Play > Crossfade) as it will also result in incorrect time display.

Length can be incorrect when files have corruptions. I believe mostly it is calculated with file size (audio part)/bitrate.

The 'MediaMonkey DirectSound output' option is the one that is selected'. It is configured to 'remove silence at the beginning / end of track' is checked'.

The crossfade option is unchecked.

So there is nothing that can be changed'.

Is there another forum that may have more detail about these values?

At this point there does not seem to be any understandable reason why some of my songs have 'blank space' at the end or beginning of my file. The only option is that the file is 'corrupted'... if that is the case then about 10% of my files have this problem (and that would be 7000 files? that seems to be difficult to believe, but I will test this theory and file 'other versions' of the song and determine if it is my file or the song itself.

Lowlander has suggested that MM will calculate "track length" based on a formula. Inevitably, that's not going to be 100% accurate (although, define "song length"! Is it when the last note disappears? What about all those records where the artists have deliberately left silence at the beginning or end of a track?).

So "corruption" is not the only possible explanation - calculating song length based on file size and bit rate is an estimate. Google "mp3 file length calculator" and there are various tools that will calculate size - you could try out some of those and see what happens.

I some files which did seem corrupted, or just where song length was dramatically wrongly calculated, but only very few, and my collection is 50,000+ tracks. Certainly nowhere near a 10% error rate - but then what would the expected error rate be?

I will research the 'google mp3 file length calculator' solution and if results are not helpful, then I will pass a few examples to MM tech help to determine if it is ME (which I suspect is true) or if there is a better way to get my songs to start when the music starts (thus not play blank space) and end *when there is no more music)
