can someone recommend a free codec pack for aac (.m4a, .m4b), h.264 (.mp4, .m4v, .mkv) type files?

QuickTime or QuickTime Alternative will take care of the AAC formats, you can use a codec pack like K-lite, CCCP or Shar007's for more comprehensive codec coverage.
