First I am using Vitreous skin ..
I think by 'box at the top' you are talking about the 'column browser'? This can be turned off by clicking the icon on the left of the window that looks like a window with columns (for from the menu .. View/Column Browser).
If this is not what you are talking about could you expand a little

Right-click on the columns to change which ones display.

... and not the top two boxes (Artist & Album by default)
