Roku Soundbridge with MediaMonkey on Windows 10

Post by vincel »

I am still using several Roku Soundbridges in my home. For many years I have used Windows Media Player on a Windows 7 PC and had no problems accessing and playing music. With Windows 7 reaching end of life, I upgraded the Windows 7 PC to Windows 10. From what I have read, you cannot use WMP on Windows 10 to serve music to Roku Soundbridges. I was unable to get it to work.

After doing some research, I found that MediaMonkey was recommended for my situation. I have installed MediaMonkey and set up sharing for uPnP/DLNA. I have an Onkyo Receiver which can access MediaMonkey and play music files with no problems. However, none of my Soundbridges will play music from MediaMonkey. I have M500's, M1000's and M2000's (some wired and some wireless), and they all display the same behavior.

At first I was just using MediaMonkey Library. Given the problems I am having, I started up MediaMonkey Server. I have the same settings for both. I can connect to either the Library or Server. I can browse artists, and they all come back with the 669 artists in my library. If I select an artist, I get the choices of {Show All Matching Songs}, [All}, and then the names of the albums by that artist. No matter what artist or album I select, it always comes back with {0 items, Press EXIT to go back}. If I elect to browse albums, they all come back with the 3698 albums in my library. But, choosing any album results in 0 items.

Are there some configuration settings I need to make to get the Soundbridges to work? Or does MediaMonkey not support Soundbridges because of their age (and older firmware)?

Could you have files in a format not compatible with the devices?

If that's the case you can setup Auto-Conversion rules (Gold feature) to pass the files in a compatible format to the Roku devices.

The files are all MP3. So, no file compatibility issue.

Hi,
Based on https://soundbridge.roku.com/documents/SBUserGuide.pdf manual it looks like it supports MM UPnP and it should work if MM UPNP/DLNA Service is seen by Roku (as reference MMW uses same protocol as MusicMatch Jukebox described in manual) and is confirmed at https://soundbridge.roku.com/community/3rd.php

Also from what I see it is possible to control your Roku directly from MMW if you enable External Renderer (Manual page 48) and then If you right click on MM Player -> Choose player and you should see Roku listed. With out Actual device I am not being able to debug more :(

As a last thing and based on what I read at https://soundbridge.roku.com/support/dwnld_update.php in of Version 3.0 they said they fixed UPnP discovery "Fixed a problem that could cause UPnP discovery of the SoundBridge to fail." so please check if your Roku SoundBridge is using latest Firmware.

Unfortunately as I said above I can't do much without actual device, nor I can guarantee that upgrading firmware will not brick/break your Roku. So I or Ventis Media can't be reliable for any damage as you are doing it on your own responsibility.
