Request not supported!

Jiri,

I now have the Gold version and was trying to implement the File Monitor option. I receive the following error: Request not supported!, but only if I point to the database on a local file server. Does this routine only support local drives and if so, isn't that a limiting feature?

No, it's just a problem of the old folder selection dialog, in the next beta there will be a new one that will allow to select network folders as well. The requirement is that you don't use Window 9x or ME, but NT or higher.

This issue was resolved in Beta 3.

Hi,

I'm currently using Beta 4 and downloading Beta 5, but I still have the problem with the unsupported request for a network drive. I've tried using a mapped drive, and also pointing directly to the server. Same result. My network is home-based using IP to connect the various computers.

Dave,

as far as I know, it is correctly implemented in Songs-DB now and should normally work even in networks, but only when all computers are running Windows NT, 2000 or XP, is it your case?

Hi Jiri,

Sorry to take so long to get back as I was out of the country on business all week. To answer your question, my file server is a Win98 machine, while mine and my wife's are both XPs.

If this feature is only (to be) supported on Windows NT and above and since I have a copy of the song library on my computer as a backup, is there an easy way from me to point Songs-DB at a new location without losing all the information in my play lists?

There are 2 possible solutions to this dilemma:

One way of moving your songs to a new location while retaining references in the Library would be to move all of your songs using Songs-DB 1.4 beta running on your XP machine (e.g. move them from the file server to your machine) and all references/playlists will be updated with the new location.

Alternatively, you could move the files (outside of Songs-DB) and use the 'retrieve moved files' function to re-import all of your missing files (once retrieved, all references will be updated so that playlists will function correctly).

In either case, I'd back up the database, though, in order to be certain that no data will be lost in case of a problem with retrieval of some files (not to imply that there are any known bugs in this functionality, but it's always a good idea to back up).

Thanks for the suggestions. Since I already have an exact copy of the music database on my XP machine, I think I'll try the second option first. My plan of attack will be to disconnect my network connection and try the retrieve function, pointing to my local drive as the source.

I'll post something later to let you know how it worked. I'm still at the office for a while longer, so it will be 3 or 4 hours before I get a chance to try it.

Rusty,

I just did the conversion and with the exception of 220 songs, everything worked fine. I don't know why 220 songs didn't update properly, but it was a small price to pay.
