Microsoft Access ODBC errors

Post by jiri »

It happens rarely to our users that they cannot start MediaMonkey due to an error shown on startup stating that there was a problem with ODBC layer for Microsoft Access. According to our knowledge there isn't anything wrong in MediaMonkey, the whole problem is in incorrect/damaged MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components). Usually it's enough to reinstall the latest MDAC and MS Jet (see below), but sometimes even this doesn't help. In such cases please follow all the steps below in order to help us in localizing the problem.

1. Install the latest MDAC (2.8)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/download ... .aspx#MDAC

2. Install the latest MS Jet update (4.0 SP8) - choose correct OS version
http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/download ... t.aspx#jet

3. In case the two updates above didn't help do the following:

a) Install "MDAC Utility: Component Checker" from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/download ... fault.aspx
- After start of CC select "Scan your machine. Do not perform analysis"
- Execute File|Save..., save the results to a file and e-mail it to us (either to my e-mail or to support e-mail)
(some compression, zip or rar, might be useful as the file is quite huge)

b) Generate debug log (as described at http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=69)

c) In description of your problem include as much as possible about your machine
- Windows OS version (including any SP, e.g. Windows XP SP 1 - English version)
- In case MM originally worked and stopped working please try to recall any application you installed recently, any hint might help!
- Add other details like CPU, HD (enough space on system drive?), ...

Thanks,
Jiri

Recently it was confirmed that this is an error in MS Jet installation that happens sometimes for some reason. MediaMonkey will have an internal mechanism for preventing this error starting from version 2.3 beta 5. If you encounter this problem even after installing that version, please repeat the steps described above (however, that shouldn't happen  )
