Rip volume level vs. analyze volume level

Post by Lowlander »

I rip my music with volume leveling on.

Afterwards I analyze the volume leveling and constistently MM reports the a volume level of +0.2 to +0.3, this seems weird.

I personally have no problem with it, but I just wanted to let you know.

Yes, both are at the default 83db.

As said this doesn't bother me at all, but I would expect it to either to be 0 difference or both + and - a 0.1, 0.2, 0.3.

A problem could be that MM on rip levels the original source. When volume leveling the track on the PC it uses the compressed version. If I'm correct compresion takes out sounds the average person can't hear anyway. This might be the difference in volume leveling (the sound taking out is at higher volume so the rip volume leveler levels the song lower to reach the 83db).

Yes, MM calculates leveling coefficient before compression and thus after compression the new value can be different. The difference depends on track and compression algorithm (mp3, ...) used.
