WMA tracks won't convert during sync

I have several playlists on MMW that I sync to MMA. However, the files with the extension ".wma" won't play. In the device's "Sync profile" I go to "Set Formats" and create an Audio file protocol with WMA selected under "File type:" and "MP3" selected under "Audio format:" (nothing else selected under "Sample rate:", "Channels:", or "Bit depth:"), but the files sync to my Android device as WMA and won't play. Am I misunderstanding how Sync works?

Set Formats sets what is supported by the device.

Instead you need to either remove WMA from Supported formats (and have incompatible audio > MP3 Auto-Conversion rule) or explicitly create a rule to convert WMA > MP3.
