Grant access for USB Sync dead end on Android [#20027]

Post by slosh »

Hello there, I am trying to sync my library on MMW to MMA. I did not manage to set up sync via wifi despite numerous attempts, but also sync via USB does not work smoothly.

I have a Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G running latest build Lineage OS, Android 12. No external storage.
On my PC I use the latest Windows 11 and most recent version of MMW.
Additional Windows USB drivers are installed.

MMA synced once with an old PC. Now I am trying to sync new songs added. When I connect via USB, my device is recognised by Windows and MMW, I enable file transfer on Android, then MMW is scanning library for a long time and after a while starts copying the files (indicated in MMW at the very bottom). Towards the end MMW shows in the bottom the message "Converting file: ", after many minutes I get an error message saying there is insufficient space in the temp folder. In the end the new songs were not added.

This might be linked to the fact that I cannot grant access for MMA to access the settings folder.

Show granting access leads to a dead end. Clicking in the "Grant access" menu on "Grant" still works. Clicking on "Continue" on the next page it takes me back to where I started.

I read the knowledge base article on "‘Permission Denied’: Unable to access / edit / sync content on the SD Card". It recommends specific action for Xiaomi devices. "On some Xiaomi devices, after installing MediaMonkey (but before running it)...". This step I cannot replicate as I cannot find "Documents" in my installed apps lists.

Thank you very much for looking into this. Hope I was clear enough for you to understand my challenge. Any hints are much appreciated!

I went through the article you shared thoroughly and it did not help. I could not follow the specific specific step for Xiaomi devices "On some Xiaomi devices, after installing MediaMonkey (but before running it)..." as I cannot find "Documents" in my installed apps lists.

Unfortuantely I cannot post screenshots, so here is a brief description. In the menu "Grant access" I click on "continue" (first screenshot on the link you shared). Another page appears saying "To grant access: A file browser will open ...". But the file browser does not open. If click on "continue" on the bottom right, it takes me back to the page I was on before.

Also I already tried to reinstall MMA and MMW without solving the issue.

Anything else I could try?

I used the most recent version and also signed up to as a beta tester. This also didn't fix the problem.

So you're seeing this with build 1080?

Hi,
Temp folder error usually indicate on either wrong folder set or problem with MM5 Fully accessing it.

Can you please create full MM5 debug log as described here viewtopic.php?f=30&t=86643 and attach it to support ticket?

That should give us enough information to see why it happen.

According to the Play Store MMA was last updated on May 4, 2023.

I am creating the debug log at the moment and will create a ticket once it the error was reproduced.

A couple of points/questions:
1) You can check what build you're using at Options > Help > About MediaMonkey (based on the May 4 date, it sounds like you're using build 1080).
2) This might be a variant of https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=20007 which was fixed in build 1080 . Did you ever see any warnings in MMA along the lines described in that bug?
3) It might be related to another issue that's been observed on occasion before with lineage OS:
- Tap 'Grant' in MMA
---> The folder selection dialog opens allowing for selection / access permission grant to the folder
- Tap 'Use this folder' and then 'Allow' to grant access to each folder
---> The main screen that shows which folders have been granted access fails to update! As far as we've been able to tell, this occurs occasionally if the Android system isn't responding correctly to the permisions request despite having granted permission.
Have you observed anything like this as you're granting access to folders?
4) Last question: I assume that the answer to all of the items below is 'yes', but to be sure: did you successfully:
a) Grant access to the /MediaMonkey folder (Step 1)?
b) Allow MediaMonkey to access photos and media on your device (Step 2)?
c) Grant access to _all_ of the various media folders on your device (Step 3)?

Also, I see you sent the debug log--thanks!

1) Thanks! I can confirm that I am using build 1080.
2) Opening MMA for the first time phone requests access which I can give without encountering any problems.
3)
- When I tap "Grant" in MMA https://pasteboard.co/vMhmYCVBcd99.png
- This screen follows https://pasteboard.co/QHYVZPTLTDEk.png
- When I click on continue it takes me back to here https://pasteboard.co/bC5GeG9qJba2.png
4)
a) Actually, no. I have the same issue as described under 3.
b) Yes.
c) No. See 4a.

Here is what the dialogue looks like to me after a clean reinstall of MMA. Hope that helps.

1 --> click "agree" on license agreement https://pasteboard.co/1DSp10fcds0B.png
2 --> click "grant" on "mediamonkey needs access to mediamonkey settings folder" https://pasteboard.co/GSSIvv2h8na3.png
3 --> click "continue" on "to grant access" https://pasteboard.co/rBmSaAAN2ONP.png
4 --> click "skip" after been taking back to 2 "mediamonkey needs access to mediamonkey settings folder" https://pasteboard.co/dnlUQo2vRsaw.png
5 --> click "allow" successfully when prompted by Android dialogue "allow mediamonkey to access photos and media on your device" https://pasteboard.co/GW8mFtMDzj8e.png
6 --> click "grant" on MM needs access to media folders. https://pasteboard.co/0PaIehQuWS35.png
7 --> click "continue", takes me back to 6 and error message appears https://pasteboard.co/Qp4KMVRhz4lU.png
8 --> error message "your device does not support writing to sd card" briefly appears, then click on "skip" https://pasteboard.co/snTjPp5vzyE5.png
9 --> error message "if acceess isnt granted", then click on "ok" https://pasteboard.co/bzzR6qPnsAgm.png
10 --> congratulations https://pasteboard.co/HTs4xyFJECc6.png

Wondering whether it has anything to do with the fact that my phone does not have a slot for SD card.

Many thanks for your quick replies and looking into this!

So if I'm understanding correctly, each time you click 'Grant' to grant access to a Folder, MMA never opens system folder browser that lets you select the folder to grant access to?
