Cast - Invalid Url and Not Seeing Sonos or Other Devices [#19653]

Post by richiefinger »

When I use the cast button it only shows my wifi router and MM5 servers
W10 can see all my Sonos Speakers, Shield, Shared Drives, TV etc etc
MM5 sees the same
Bubble UPnP on same Android phone sees the same
Even stock LG music player on my phone sees all this.
Surely MMA 2.0 should be seeing the same?

I've tried to copy the info from Bubble UPnP to manually enter it on MMA2.0
Protocol: http
Server ip address: 192.168.1.138
Port: 1400
Device Description file path: what do i put in here? I've left it as DeviceDescription
This populates the url as http://192.168.1.138:1400/DeviceDescription.xml

When i hit add it says invalid url
I've tried copying exactly what it says on Bubble aswell and always get invalid url

Am I doing something wrong or is it a bug?

Casting should work to any Google Cast or DLNA/UPnP, so it sounds like a bug if other apps on the same device see the players.

Can you press the Cast button, wait for the list to update, press Cancel, and then then submit a debug log (Help | Send logs) and share the log ID here?

And can you submit and post another log ID after triggering the Invalid URL error for a valid url?

That'll hopefully help us better understand the problem.

Thanks!

Before I do that I've realized I used the term "Cast" What I meant was that it was when I use the Media Servers button.

If I click on cast in MMA my Nvidia Shield is seen but nothing else.
If I click on the Cast button on MM5 it sees Sonos, Shield, TV etc

I've sent through the debug logs before and after trying to add the new media server and getting the invalid url message.

Before we start analyzing this, it sounds like there's a misunderstanding of the functionality.

The 'Media Servers' node is only designed to show UPnP/DLNA media servers that are sharing content that you want to browse using MMW. Do you have any other UPnP/DLNA media servers running besides MMW5 and the one running on your router (your Sonos Speaker, Shield, TV are almost certainly not Media Servers)?

The Casting functionality can only cast (=Play) to DLNA/UPnP or Google Cast receiver devices (e.g. Sonos, TV, Google TV i.e. smart devices that have speakers attached). If you attempt to cast from your phone using e.g. VLC does it present a different list of devices than MMA? (I'm asking because it's likely that the phone's network environment is slightly different than the PC's and that may be the root of the issue AND because it's not clear to me whether your were trying to casting or browse over UPnP/DLNA with BubbleUPnP).

Thanks for your patience--I just want to make sure that we're understanding each other.

I also am seeing this issue when trying to add a Sonos device description URL.
Galaxy S22Ultra, Sonos Play3 & Five
I copied the device description URL from MM5 on windows, which works.
http://192.168.1.240:1400/xml/device_description.xml
Every time I try to add the error "Invalid url format" is displayed

The 'invalid url error' that appears when attempting to manually enter a UPnP Server will be fixed in build 1056. Tracked at:
