I use a Synology DS418 NAS for all media which is set to a media server using DLNA to then push with MMA to my Niam Uniti Cute Amp. There is ZERO music files on my device. MMA does not allow to only setup for a media server for music by default. Currently a media server can be used only via selecting: Media server >> NAS >> Music >> By Folder each time. I need to boot MMA and it sets it to show Nas music not 'Internal storage' media only. Why can't a library or folder be set to an off device folder? If there a way to this then it is currently insanely hard to find!!
I use an Andriod pad and sometimes my Android phone to cast.
Often I play a tune and hit stop at the end and it carries on and disregards all command after. There is no way to stop the tune other than turn off casting.
I've just paid for a pro licence and find very disapointing with Fisher-Price config for any settings only for internal storage...

Maybe you are asking something different to what I am thinking, and his answer is correct .. ?
I have a Synology NAS. I can browse the Media Server on the NAS using MMA.
I can browse by Folder, but alternatively I can browse by Album, or AlbumArtist, or Artist or Genre.
You don't see those indices?
And I can play from the NAS using MMA, and I see album art, and I can play playlists

I do have files in my Device, ie those that I synced from my NAS, to the device, using MMA
But I can also play in MMA any of the tracks that I didn't sync to the phone, as long as I can connected to the WiFi that the NAS is connected to.

Being a competent developer myself i see it as easy and effective enhancement in the app, drawing more users because of the capability.
The narrowing of probable phone tunes only, is not forward thinking.
Decent users with a little tec saavy (mostly audiophiles) will have servers with mass libraries. Having a little more than simple access with a pro licence would ramp up your funds!!

You can access your media via DLNA (even outside the network), but there is no option to scan a media server into MMA. So browsing is always done on the remote server.
ellio wants a better experience for users that use their UPnP server as their data storage location, whereas MMA is designed to access the UPnP server occasionally and to download content from that server for more permanent access.
The reason we took this approach is because UPnP/DLNA is fairly limited as a protocol (from both performance and data synchronization perspectives) so we never really considered it for more than occasional use. You can see the same philosophy at play in MMW: you can browse a UPnP server, but most MMW functionality isn't available (performance can be alleviated by scanning the server contents into the MMW DB, but that still doesn't change the fact that limited metadata can be downloaded from the server, and that it's a one-way exchange of information).
Our solution to this is the MediaMonkey Server, but it's only available as an alpha and hasn't yet been integrated with MMA.

I'm in the same boat. I can't find the right anywhere-there-is-internet media connector. That lets you keep, unmolested, your mp3 tags.
I'm carrying 3tb of audio files. I'm not trying to defend that. I realize it's possibly probably a little unhinged. Doesn't change the fact that I have them, and I don't want to have to Sophie's Choice them into smaller wads to be able to use Media Monkey or any other local-file focused manager. How am I outpacing the technology on this?
I can't carry 3tb everywhere sanely. I've got a fold 5 phone, it only carries 1tb, if I have no apps. it doesn't have an sd card slot (while not gone, those are evaporating as of late) and even if it did, micro sd only goes to 1tb, like it did a decade ago. Connecting a usb to my phone permanently-ish as extra storage has the size maybe, but is not sane. That thing will fall out constantly, coauthor the destruction of my phone when it gets bumped while in the slot, and I have to take it out to charge quickly without sun temperature bonus heat.
Plex failed. It's the closest so far to succeeding, and i bought the lifetime pass. but recently I had a hiccup in my database, and when I rebuilt it, Plex went on a slasher-flick rampage through my carefully curated mp3 tags, because it was built on the principal that it knows media better than you, so just lay back and try to enjoy it. For video, it does know better than me. Do your thing, Mr Plex. But the layers of mechanations you have to configure, uncheck, deconstruct, or mislead to get Plex to leave your tags well enough alone are unobvious, unintuitive, mocked and discouraged. Make one mistake and it will get you.
Media Monkey leaves my tags alone, so I bought the lifetime pass. I gotta stop doing that. All the marvels and intricacies of it's user interface are only for locally stored files. Connecting to my Media Monkey library (or any remotely sourced collection) means that front page where we get to choose from big pretty buttons digging in by artist, year, genre, title... yeah delete all that. Media server is my only choice, and digging through my collection by folder structure at high speed down the interstate is all that's left. It's not Media Monkeys fault! I'm not assigning blame. Just frustration at product after product failing to meet the mail unless I prove I don't care what happens to my tags or I don't love my audio so much that I've amassed an irresponsible portion of it. One day some uber nerd in a parent's basement will read one of my manifestos and really get it, and I just hope I'm still alive at that point.
