What's on the wishlist?

Post by Lowlander »

I have gone through most of the postings on this wishlist forum and created a wishlist with all those wishes.
This list is fairly complete and it's now up to you all to inform me about old wishes or wishes hidden in other forums.

How to use it
This wishlist is for your information and helps you in finding which features have been requested. So before posting you should check it out. You'll need to find the corresponding posts yourself (sorry). The list isn't sorted on importance and wishes on the list might not be picked up by the program makers.

How to add a wish
Please Private Message me with the wish and the link to the corresponding forum item. Only wishes with a corresponding forum item will be added by me. This is so that other users can understand the wish and add their opinions as well.

There is some problem in sending private messages in phpBB (which is running this forum), I'll try to find out what's wrong, what can be done to fix it.

As for the wishlist - it's really nice compilation Lowlander! I believe it will help many people! Btw, maybe you could change it to 'sticky' post type, it will be always on top then (if you can't do it, let me know and I will).

The error message does appear, but the message goes through. If you want to make sure it went through, check your outbox, it should show up there!

Preliminary to do list for MM 2.2

Post by rusty »

For those of you that are interested, here's a very rough and very preliminary list of what we intend to tackle for MediaMonkey 2.2. It's based primarily on feedback from the forums combined with some our high level objectives for the next release which were to:
-give MM a sleeker, more attractive look
-make MM easier to use and understand for the average user, especially when it comes to using it in conjunction with portable music players
-add some of the checklist features that are currently missing
-limit the size of the release to something that could be done in a couple of months

There are undoubtedly going to be changes to the list; Some features/fixes will be added and others removed, but it gives a very rough guide about what we're currently thinking:
  • Library/Properties:
New: Make it easier to edit track properties (e.g. ratings) while playing by allowing properties window to be locked to Now Playing
New: Option to turn off character limit checking when moving files
New: Add option to not always modify track timestamps
New: Allow user to view Tracks by date added to the file system
New: Genres: Ability to customize the list of available Genres
New: Volume leveling default volume should be adjustable + higher default
New: Volume leveling a la MP3Gain
New: Integrate Now Playing dialog into the main view
Fix: Levelling volume of the played track isn't as fast as it could be
Fix: Default track order should be an empty string + 04 shouldn't change to 4
Fix: MM sometimes scans directories even when they're not selected
Fix: User should be able to edit volume leveling values
Fix: Editing or leveling paused track --> 1 sec of playback
Fix: Show 'comments' (and other missing important fields) in tracklist
Fix: Character-limit checking dialog is confusing
Fix: Clarify 'Add Tracks to the Library...' (it's used to add _and_ rescan)
Fix: Improve Usability when View Player is Disabled (i.e. include play controls & status info in MM interface)
Fix: 'All' folder is redundant in many instances
Fix: Autorename doesn't support accented characters / Improved handling of 'illegal' characters
Fix: Improved representation of Inserted CDs vs. Physical CDs
Fix: Add folders logic is flawed: cannot add directory without subdir
Fix: Track Titles are Confusing (Track #'s in Now Playing and playlists are confusing)

    Search/AutoPlaylists/Playlists:
New: More intuitive/powerful ability to edit playlists
New: Advanced Search/Autoplaylist should support 'Last Played' queries (gold)
New: New Logical Operators for 'Advanced Search' (gold)
    New: Docked Search Window
New: Ability to restrict search to current view
    New: Search for filename
New: Much better interface for 'Advanced' searches

    Player/Playback/Now Playing:
    New: Small in-player visualization
New: Support for Visualization plug-ins + Bundle visualization plugin(s)
Fix: A couple of graphic glitches in the internal player
Fix: Not all characters are shown properly in in player window
Fix: Playback reacts slowly to some actions
Fix: Shuffle functionality prevents seeing what song was played
Fix: Remove CD while playing --> Now Playing list stops playing

    Items Related to Device Export:
New: Support for data transfer to external devices without forcing playlist creation
Fix: Don't show non-existent drives in 'Send-to' menu
Fix: Send to: requires extra steps
Fix: Send-to device (Copy) adds files to library
    Fix: Send to network location

    Systemic issues:
New themeable skin for MM, with much more modern look
    New: WMA9 Support
New: Allow database to be created to arbitrary location
New: Official support for shared db
    Fix: Simplify error messages
Fix: revamped CD Album catalog & Virtual CD functionality
Fix: Minor Cleanup of Toolbar Menus

    Configuration:
Configuration options for file re-scans are confusing (they're distributed between the Library and File Monitor options tabs)

    CD Burning (Gold?):
    Burn Audio CD (without Nero)
    Burn Data CD
One final comment: As you can see, some of the work planned involves changes to MediaMonkey's look and feel, if graphic artwork is a talent of yours, please drop me a note--we could use your help.

Yep

Post by Lowlander »

I must admit I like this list for the next version. Of course there are always other things left, but that's why it's your program and not mine. I will be looking out for the first beta release to get to play with it.

Thanks

Genre deletion

Post by Lowlander »

Yes you can modify the genre listing manuallu right now.

First of all you need to be careful so backup the DB before starting.

You'll need to edit the DB and well the genre's table. You can delete any genre with an IDGenre higher than 100000 and if it is not used in any song in the DB. Don't delete any of the other genre's as these need to be in the DB for MM (they come standard with MM).

So you'll be stuck with those first 147 or so genre's.

HUH? Which File? Where is it??

You can delete any genre with an IDGenre higher than 100000 and if it is not used in any song in the DB.

Can you walk me to the file location?

Don't delete any of the other genre's as these need to be in the DB for MM (they come standard with MM).

And if I do? Will it stop working?

I would love to abbreviate the list down to the 4 or 5 that I use - I will never have the need for both Sound Track & Soundtrack.

Data folder

Post by Lowlander »

I'm talking about MediaMonkey.mdb which MM installs in Program Files\MediaMonkey\Data.

In the table Genre's you have a listing of all genre's used in MM. It has 3 fields: IDGenre, GenreName & Description. The IDGenre of genre's you want to delete needs to be 100000 and up (The first ones MM needs at all times, this might be changed in a future version of MM).

You can't delete genre's that are in use as other parts of the Database refer to this table.

So before you go ahead deleting genre's you might want to go to the genre node in MM itself (not DB) and see which genre's are listed (MM only list the ones in use. You can use drag & drop to move files to a different genre (or to move them to one version of the same genre).

So in conclusion you are stuck for now with the pre-existing list of genre's (but that only bothers in the properties window of a song, in the genre node it will only list the ones that are in use). If you add songs to MM that have a non existent genre MM will create the genre (so you'll need to delete it again if you don't want it).

And remember to not have MM running while editing the DB, just to make sure no conflicts arrise!

Music Nerd Wish :o)

Post by Vae »

Dear Media Monkey,

I have one small wish that would really be for the proper music nerd. In addition to a Composer view it would also be wonderful if you could view by Musicians. In a lot of music, especially jazz, you have a lot of people who play in multiple bands but who have never been a band leader themselves so it's hard to view every song that Oscar Pettiford or Booker Ervin played on.

I think this feature would be especially nice for any aspiring musicians with large collections of music, maybe even add it to the Gold version as not many people would bother filling in data from liner notes... unlike me :o)

It only needs one more thing to be perfect shoutcast playing

and ripping, perhaps just using the streamripper winamp plugin.

Dell Digital Jukebox support

Post by ryanbelv »

Has anybody else forwarded the idea to have the dell digital jukebox supported?

I happen to love mine. (especially since they released a utility that lets you control how you add music directly as opposed to using music match)

Media Monkey seems like the tool of choice for managing large mp3 libraries and I'm loving it so far!
