Podcast update issues (podcast list not updated)

Post by Macarena »

Dear devs,
Dear Luděk,

I'm reporting on two issues I consider inconsistent or strange.
  1. On [automatic] update of the podcasts: The list under Podcasts node looses the outdated tracks as they are removed, but the new tracks are not added to the list as they are downloaded. The list is correctly updated only on reentering the node Podcasts (changing away and back).

I would await that the list is updated online not only by the removing the outdated episodes, but also by adding the newly downloaded tracks.
  2. Update all Podcasts does not redownload manually deleted episodes. Is this a feature? Does MM remember manually removed episodes so it can later ignore them in the download list? Is there and option to change the behaviour? I would await that the Update all Podcasts command redownloads any manually removed [<edit next day] episode fitting the podcast update options.

On the contrary, the previously manually downloaded episodes are removed, when applying the command.

Hi,

1. you probably mean Podcasts node in the "List" view and not the default "Tabbed view", right ?

2. If the episode is downloaded and subsequently deleted then it is never automatically downloaded again. You can download it manually anytime later though -- supposing that you have the "Show removed episode links" option enabled.

Yes, it is the Podcasts node and the List view. I didn't tried the Tabbed or the List by album views. But I will tomorrow.

I'm not sure, but for testing purposes (see the issue above), it may be worth to set an option to ignore such marking. That is, to ignore, whether the episode has been downloaded and removed manually and just go with the options for the particular podcast RSS. As I pointed out, the manually downloaded episodes are removed according to the podcast options on Update all podcasts.

I very well understand also the current behavior, when one does not wish to re-download the manually deleted episodes. If a user could see that 'never download again' marking, they can revisit the episode and unmark it to "automatic", and a manually deleted episode would become an ordinary or automatically deleted episode. That could be very well applied to manually downloaded episodes as a 'keep forever' marking.

1. I cannot replicate the refresh issue (just tested with 2226), in my case the episodes are added there as are downloaded:
Screen1 (8 to download, 2 in the list): https://www.dropbox.com/s/2n8s6h2ckaxnb ... 5.png?dl=0
Screen2 (7 to download, 3 in the list): https://www.dropbox.com/s/uyket5mmeq2hu ... 9.png?dl=0
Screen1 (0 to download, 10 in the list): https://www.dropbox.com/s/a698jgzwejvf3 ... 2.png?dl=0

Not sure what I do differently, it is Podcasts node in the "List" view, are you testing the same way?

2. As for the automation deletion / re-downloading. I guess that automatic re-downloading of already deleted episodes does not make much sense and is mostly undesired.
But I believe you can adjust the deleteion options to not delete episodes that haven't been listened yet + retain the X most recent + keep episodes with rating higher than certain rating, see these options: https://www.dropbox.com/s/notdvf3qx952w ... 6.png?dl=0
Isn't this sufficient?

Ahoj Luďku,

I've created a video using MM build 2226: https://www.screencast.com/t/bFk4Ymnt4dFY
Description of the situations:
  • time 0: Node Podcasts, List view
  • time 15s: Sorting the list by date ascending and descending.
  • time 20s: Because automatic podcast update did not start (reason unknown), I started the Update all podcasts.
  • time 25-35s: three tracks are removed from the (visible) list due to podcasts options.
  • downloading tracks takes some horrible time, bare with the video or jump to 2:50s
  • time 3min 0s-50s: a couple of sorting desc and asc by date, indeed one new track seems to be added to the list (Rádiožurnál 04.02.2020), but that is it.
  • time 3min 55-4min 0s: changing nodes back and forth, back to Podcasts
  • time 4min 0s+: a couple of sorting desc and asc by date, and voilá, new tracks 10+ dated 04.02.2020 and a couple dated 05.02.2020 appeared in the list.

Oh, yes, giving stars to them makes sense.

I agree that re-downloading already deleted episodes does not make sense on a daily use of the MM. Only that the current behavior was postponing the possibility to reproduce the other issue of this topic on the spot: To properly reproduce the issue with missing tracks, MM needed some not-yet-downloaded episodes and a manual removal of some others wouldn't help. Well, I think we can abandon this idea.
