remote DLNA access?

Post by 68rustang »

The webhelp for DLNA states:

Code: Select all

Be aware of the following issues when enabling external access:

You'll need to configure the DLNA client to connect to http://<Network IP address>:<Port#>/DeviceDescription.xml
So it won't work with domian names only IP? What do I use for DeviceDescription.xml? I am trying to connect to my homeserver from my iphone across the WWW. I am using Airplayer and the only things I can specify when adding a DLNA server are address, username and password. I have tried http://xxx.homeserver.com:8083/iServer.xml but that doesn't work. IServer is what I named the DLNA instance I am trying to connect to. Locally it is fine, Airplayer sees it on its own.

Have you tried: http://xxx.homeserver.com:8083 and http://xxx.homeserver.com:8083/DeviceDescription.xml? Also make sure that in your router you have opened port 8083 and set to the PC with MediaMonkey.

I hadn't tried with DeviceDescription.xml before but that doesn't work either. The port is forwarded in my router. and I can access other services I have forwarded through other ports.

Try this on a regular browser outside of your network: http://<Network IP address>:<Port#>/DeviceDescription.xml

What happens?

The same thing that happens when I try:

http://xxx.homeserver.com:8083/DeviceDescription.xml

I get a little spinning icon on teh IE9 tab but nothing ever shows up. I also tried the IP address in Airplayer on the iPhone and nothing.

I just tried to the the same and used my domain name and it worked.

http://domainname.com:4000/DeviceDescription.xml

Did you enable Accept external IP addresses? Otherwise I would look over the router settings again.

I figured it out. I didn't realize that the address was case sensitive. I was typing devicedescription.xml where it should have been DeviceDescription.xml

Thank you for your help. With your feedback I at least knew I wasn't trying to do the impossible.

It's actually helping me understand the process better too, although for now in network access is all I need.
