Some questions, maybe some bugs:
- the script is very slow, I believe when generating PUIDs for the first time; would the script be faster once the tracks has a tag containing the PUID? If so, I could pass MusicBrainz on my whole library just to embed PUIDs in each track. Can you confirm?

About the bug: even though some fields appear in the html form with other values than current track's one, when selected (clicking in the checkbox) no change will happen in the row containing changed values. For example, a newer album title, when selected, it will be correctly shown highlighted in yellow.
This doesn't work for other fields: year for example. How is that?

About generating/using the PUID: It would be much faster to do this step only as an option.
Most of the albums or titles will be found faster and only with a textual search without the PUID.
If searching with a PUID, the script should check first, if this finterprint is not already stored in the id3-Tags. If not, saving the generated PUID inside the song would be really helpful.

But you should know:
The PUIDs are being phased out in favor of open source solutions. MusicBrainz will use the new AcousticID in the near future.
(The process will be the same: Generating a fingerprint from the choosen title, search for it on MusicBrainz, show the found result.)

Actually they're moving to Echoprint... BTW MusicBrainz offers today AcousticID....who knows, maybe there's an option In MusciBrainz to embed only fingerprints.... If so I could update the whole music library.... however MM tagger would not recognize the fingerprint....

You are right, Echoprint is theyr new fingerprint system.

Do you know, if someone (onenonymous?) is still working on this MusicBrainz Tagger script?

I would love to see some features who are already possible with Mp3tag and the great Web Source Scripts.

The author hasn't updated the script in over 2 years, and I haven't seen him visiting the forum much. So I wouldn't get my hopes up.

The downloaded file should be an mmip file. You double-click to install.

The download file downloads as a .ZIP on my computer. I thought the MMIP file was in the ZIP. I had to rename the zip to MMIP.

Yeah, internet explorer sometimes renames them to .zip.

Can you be more specific about which features you'd like to see? I have heavily modified this script to work with NGS and AcoustID.

You are partly correct when you say MB is moving to EchoPrint. EchoPrint works today on a test server but they are also adding AcoustID which has the advantage of being developed by one of the lead musicbrainz developers. Currently the same functionality is available for both types of prints but the AcoustID requests goto Lansky's server (very fast) where the links are made to MB. In other words: both work well with MB today. Both could be better, but both work well.

You can see some basic stats for comparison (PUID vs AcoustID) at this page: http://acoustid.org/stats

Below is a partial changelog I started keeping awhile back - I stopped adding to it at some point because I'm lazy:
--

Code: Select all

Switched to MusicBrainz NGS

Added AcoustID Support (Removed Deprecated PUID)

Added Album Disambiguation Options

Added AlbumArtist and Artist Separator Options
-uses MusicBrainz join strings or mediamonkey join string
-option to include join strings of "feat." in track title

Added option to enforce track count when performing AcoustID lookups
-the first pass to MB also checks track-count to try to reduce the # of similar album results

Added support for Disc# (MusicBrainz MediumPosition)

Fix Genres
	- Now uses Release and Release-Group data
-option to merge desired genre tags with existing tags (can still select if you'd like totally new tags to appear or only tags already in the database)

Fix for fixURL which allows '+' to appear in searches properly

Added comparison of SongLength to MusicBrainz Duration
	- helps with some of the situations where tracks have the same title
	- setting to change the allowed difference (in ms)
