Playlist to Ipod

I have never had much success trying to sync from MM to IPOD -- it takes forever -- so, I send new tracks to IPOD and that works ok. But, if I try to send a playlist MM starts copying all the songs to the IPOD -- the songs are already on the IPOD nad I don't want two copies clogging it up. What to do?
