I ask here because
1. A lot of people appear to use EAC to obtain their flac files from their CD's in the first place; and
2. I can;t register on the MM website forum for some reason.

I'm in the process of FLAC'ing all my CD's (new verb?).
All is going well except that I am now doing a CD which seems to have a scratch or damage to the CD which is causing some problems.

It's track 8 on the CD - all others have worked fine.
Show it is still going (has been sitting / reading / error checking this track for 3 1/2 hours already and shows that it will take another 8 hours to complete !!!!

In case it's relevant, and because it's quite obscure it's track 8 on CD 1 of
"Paris" by Jon English.

My chances of finding another copy of this CD are just about nil.... so tips / help / advice all welcome.

Hmm now its been going 4h20m and still says 8h7m to go.....

Rip All Other tracks from a CD and uncheck Track 8. Then restart RIP of only Track 8. If it still stalls. Change PC and CD/DVD to eliminate Laser calibration.

It's the 21st Century I'm lucky I even have one CD reader.... and only one.

It didn't stall it was just going VERY slowly... I left it overnight and it did work, played the track this morning and no problems with it at all. So the error correction works well, just (in this case at least) very slowly.

Not sure what you are referring to but Drives are cheap these days and BD reader can also read CDs. In some cases better than CD Reader due the narrow laser beam and better tracking system. But in Copy/RIP some DRM Audio CDs for Backup there is nothing better than my 1xSCSI 20+ Years old CD-RW Burner on Win 98SE PC.

If by BD you mean Blu-ray, my drive is one.

OK doing another one. Quite a few scratches BUT seems to play fine.

EAC has taken close to 36 hours on this CD so far! (not a typo)
Was having issues with tracks 16 on so I just unchecked those first time. Then went back to do 16-20 and its taking forever...

It's going, but very very slowly. Track 18 so far 15 hours 33 minutes with 8 minutes left to go (it alleges)

Must be SOMETHING I can do.....

Further to my last post (still seeking answers) EAC keeps crashing ("not responding" error) on me whilst trying to do this.

Looks like you have ghost, I wonder if CD is somehow protected or have strange TOC.

Have you tried to play CD in regular CD player and does it show all 20 tracks.

Also try one by one and try simply to play that track in MMW?

It sees and plays the tracks just fine from CD in MM, VLC, etc and the car cd player.

Seems just unable to read/compress to FLAC with ELC.

Are there other programs I could try? I've heard of dbpoweramp and CUEripper - these useful?

also (further to my previous post) are there different settings in EAC I could try?

Perhaps tell it that a minor hiccup doesn't matter and to encode it anyway - as I suspect that the scratches on the CD are causing minor errors which only EAC cares about, but a normal CD player ignores / deals with just fine....

I do not use EAC for long time.

Lasers on CD Players and on CD Burners on PC have different Laser calibration and some are prone to be more sensitive.

As an example I have one DVD that do not play in any DVD players both PC and Standalone but play without any issues on my Blue Ray player.

For such stubborn cases like yours I have Separate PC on Windows 98 SE with Old SCSI CD Burner (20 Years Old) that Rips CD at 1x speed and still haven't found any CD that can't read

Well I have just gone through and converted several hundred CD's to FLAC.
I still have about 15 I will need to do, as they are not in the database so I will have to enter all those song titles etc manually.

Of the ones I've done I have around 10 CD's where some or most of the songs won't read/convert due to a failure in error correction.

I've tried the 'polish the scratches out with toothpaste method on a couple at random but to no avail.

Any suggestions? I don't have another CD drive and cant justify spending $70 to buy one just for these few CDs. And there's no guarantee it would work anyway.

I have ERROR RECOVERY QUALITY set to HIGH (should I change this?)

Any other settings you need to know to assist me diagnose the problems?

OK so I decided to try another converter and found: fre:ac - free audio converter
https://sourceforge.net/projects/bonken ... p_redirect

This absolutely breezed through it no problem at all.

I can't seem to set it up with the custom titles in the same way as EAC, and it dumps it into a single (selected) directory rather than creating a directory for that artist and album.

So at least it seems I have a way to convert these files even if there's some bothersome manual renaming to be done afterwards.


I'd still prefer an EAC solution if possible though.

Have you tried burst mode in EAC?
