FLAC because it seems to be widely supported, supports tagging and is opensource, so it isn't going to go by the way of the dodo any time soon. I'm surprised you didn't bring up other semi-popular lossless formats like MonkeysAudio (APE) or WavPack. What about Apple's lossless format (ALAC), probably the most popular lossless codec around by # of supported devices sold? Also, I don't know why but Tom's lossless Audio Kompressor (TAK) seems to popular in asia. Lastly, I don't understand why people are using WAV because you don't get the space-saving compression from other lossless codecs out there and there is no ability to have embedded tagging data, as one typically stores it in an associated cue-sheet.

Because compatibility with hardware. Pretty much everything can play a WAV file.
