Guide to Re Organizing Music Library with Lots of Playlist

The monkey has LOTS of ways to move things around. I have seen posts about migrating to a new computer etc. I have not seen a more comprehensive guide that address pros and cons etc of how to use these features. I want to move things on disk, I want to rename some of the higher level folders etc. I use to organize in folders by Type, Blues, Rock, Classical, Jazz, Bought after 2009 etc on multiple disks. That was back in the day when disks were small and slower. I have over a hundred playlists. I would to have these automatically updated.

I can create a test machine to try some of these things out, and I will be happy to share my results with anyone who cares, but, can anyone share posts and articles they have tried to d this type of thing?

Thanks, Can you answer these questions? Some of the stuff I am looking for would show issues that folks have had with auto organize. I remember seeing one post that said, "Be careful with how many files you set to move with auto organize" I have 6947 files in 155 GB. So probably as step 1 of the guide I would be looking for would be

1) go to file and run Check Reports

2) It would say, check out the section (included in auto organize doc) on Organizing Files and Folders

It would answer questions like
3) When moving files. does auto organize check that the destination has enough space?
Does auto organize update all of your playlists with the new location? Have you tested that with imported playlists
Does auto organize handle moving from one disk to another?

It would include, suggestions on what to do if
4) do you frequently download subsets of your music to mp3 players.
(like don't use the option to tag the filename with artist / title) if you want to check just the song name and you are good at figuring out the artist

5) It would include a link or links to migrating your collection and library to a new computer.
6) I t might include a section on what to do when you want to sink to your Android MM and you have 155 GB on you Windows machine and a lot less on you android phone

7) I would remind you to exclude you whole music library from indexing and searching.

I will be happy to contribute to this project, however, I was hoping that the really knowledgeable folks like you and others would comment before I got started

Sync is a completely separate thing: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... oid_device Sync will rename files as you set it to for each device. How you organize your files on your PC has no bearing on sync.

When you use Auto-Organize Files it will show you the changes that will be made prior to making them. It will show if you will end up with duplicate files (which will overwrite files, thus file loss). You can use it to move to a different folder, different drive or to network storage. When you use MediaMonkey to move/rename files it will update any Playlists within MediaMonkey (but none on your PC).

Hi,
It is very possible that Windows explorer is creating Thumbs file and read it so it is locked for moving. Thus Retry works.

turn off things in explorer for the destination folders?

12) This is what Collections are for, they can separate content within MediaMonkey.

I have a "collection" called Classical Music. I do not know how I got it. A search in help or on the forums does not tell me how to set them up. But it is a cool thing. Is it automatic? Really, I have no clue where it came from. Maybe over 10 years ago, I knew, but I can't figure it out now. Searching for a feature, that has a generic name, takes you to a lot of posts that have nothing to do with the feature. That is one of the reasons I am doing this. If I had a link to the feature collections I would be happier. Try this, go to help and search for collections. Do you see anything about the MM feature collections? Some of us are not making a career out of reading the forums.

The Classical Music Collection has been there since MediaMonkey 4 was launched. It uses Type = Classical as Criteria. Music also includes the Criteria Type = Classic as of MediaMonkey 4.1, Gold users can remove that if so desired.

thanks. Is this a bug or a feature request? Who do you tell that collections does not show up in search? Well, it does under WebHelp:Playback_Rules If it is about collections, don't you think collections should be in the title. "Isn't it ironic", that the folks doing the help for the best software for organizing a media library, have trouble organizing the documentation, that tells you how to do it. Maybe we should start a kickstarter campaign to hire someone to update the doc. I tried searching for the "Files to Edit" nada.
