Duplicates OF Everything

Hi,

I've never seen this before, even on Windows 10.

I have ONE Music Library. There are NO duplicates in it. However when I start Media Monkey, EVERY track is duplicated in the main list pane. Looking into Prefs/Libraries shows only one selected, pressing F5 does nothing.

I'm guessing this is a Win10/MM problem? Like I said, I never used to have this problem, but I just installed a new Media Monkey (windows decided to delete my old) and maybe it's a different updated version then my last? Dunno. Anyway, I'd like to get down from 40,000 tracks to 20, without playing around with 'Find Duplicates,'

Hi,
Please make screenshot, also when you use Music -> Files to edit -> Dead links are MMW list any tracks, additionally you can check each duplicate if they contain correct path filename (Drive letter included) and let us know so that we can give you more details answer.

Check Path, if it's the same it's a bug (make sure you're using MediaMonkey 4.1.14), if they're different you may have moved the files or the drive may have a new driveID (can happen for external/networked drives, less common for internal drives).

I have a similar problem. Mysteriously, 95% of my music has been duplicated in the listing (NOT in the actual directory on the C drive). What's weird is the 5% or so that are NOT duplicated. Sometimes it's a whole album, other times it's a few songs in the middle of an album. The songs that SHOULD be there have a C:\.... path. Those that are duplicates have a ?\... path. I THINK I know what happened: A disk scan indicated that, in the near future, I would start having errors on my drive. So over Thanksgiving, I cloned the existing drive (not YET having any errors) onto a brand new drive. Therefore, temporarily, those drives were both on at the same time. I have since removed the old drive (I may still use it as an extra, external drive), and am now booting and referencing Media Monkey (4.1.18.1859) on my PC (Win-10/64). There must be over 3,000 duplicated entries. I'm STILL not sure how or why most were duplicated. However, the main questions is: Is there some way to fix this other than deleting the entries 1-by-1? After changing drive you need to change the driveID in MediaMonkey: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... n+database

So you could remove all the files that are on the C:\ drive and then do the procedure for the files on the ?:\ drive.

That doesn't sound exactly right. The C: drive is now the new (cloned) drive, so I would want those files exactly where they are. The OLD C drive (now the "?" drive) is no longer attached to the PC. However, Media Monkey THINKS it exists (but obviously without a drive letter), and has retained the file listing and I suppose indexing; thus the unwanted duplicates (that don't actually exist as far as the PC is concerned) are the ones that need to be deleted out of the Media Monkey list. I am looking for a way to do that (remove all ?:\ files) without doing it 1 by 1. I haven't yet checked your knowledgebase item, but I will soon. However, it seems doubtful that deleting the entries for BOTH drives is desirable.

If you delete from the old ?:\ drive you will loose the files entries on Playlists and Play History. However you can do this easily using the Location sub-node (ie. Music > Location) and remove the drive.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply; everything gets incredibly busy twixt Thanksgiving and Christmas. Your suggestion worked perfectly! Under music there was the C drive and then another, unlettered drive. I simply highlighted the unlettered drive, hit delete, and it even "warned" me that it wouldn't actually delete the files from the computer, but just the index/list (no fear factor). The files on C remained untouched.

While setting up Auto-Organize rules only, I ended up with duplicate entries in the database for nearly ALL tracks in the database. They are identical entries, including the Path. Both entries play normally and in fact, both entries are highlighted (bold) when either one of them is playing. I have tried Rescanning, Locate Moved/Missing Files, and Maintain Library. How do I get them cleared out? I experimented by deleting the tracks from the database on only a small Collection in my library, then restarting MM (rescanning). Deleting everything is not a good option. Besides taking a very long time, some Collection criteria that are "equal to" or "not equal to" no longer contain the items in that criteria (i.e. Genre=Blues) because deleting the tracks removed those checkboxes. This duplication thing has happened to me multiple times over the years and deleting chunks of tracks and rescanning is the only way I could find to clean up the database. Not a reasonable option.

If they have different Added value you could sort on Added and remove all the recently Added files (from whenever the duplication occurred). Do make sure you only remove from the Library.

I have similar problem as OP. Your solution quoted above shows the great functionality of MM. In my case I can see both the old location and new location within MM Music > Location (on my Surface with Win 8.1). But my question is this: if I remove the old location in MM so that MM is left reading only the new location, will MM automatically update my playlists with the songs from the new location? (Right now all playlists point to the old location, so all songs are greyed out.) I appreciate the assist!

No, it will remove the files from the Playlists and you'll loose Play History and unsaved tags as well. You need to update the old files with the new location (thus you have to remove the new files instead, then update).

Thanks for info Lowlander! So, to be able to keep playlists intact I do this:

1- I delete from MM library the new files showing "new location\...." (here is one: D:\Music\Béla Fleck\Hits\#41.mp3)
and
2- update the MM library file location for all the music showing "old location\..." (here is one: ?:\Music\Béla Fleck\Hits\#41.mp3)

I searched the forum re: how to update the files' location en masse in MM and I see 2 possibilities:

- either the 3rd party script here on the forum at "Update Location of Files in Database 1.3 (2012-06-12) [MM2+]"
- or MM auto organize function (http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... enames/4.0)

Can you tell us which is the best/right option of those two? Or will both do it? (I've never used auto organize before.)

The Update Location Addon I linked above is probably the easiest in this scenario.
