Any plan to add .webm as a file type? [#7353]

Post by Pietercape »

Are there any plans to add file type .web to MM? It is apparently an open source file format and is increasingly available as a choice on YouTube.

There's been an entry in the bug track since 2011 covering this: 7353: WebM Support

There hasn't been any activity on that page since 2011 however. It does show that the developers are aware of the format and that there may be plans to support at some point.

Webm is really an online format and not really meant as video format for files on the PC. The common PC format would be MP4 which YouTube also features (not on all videos though).

The format webm was created to optimize video on the web. That's true. But we all download videos and would like to just play them using MM. Please don't characterize webm as ONLY useful on the web. No one wants to have to convert a downloaded video just to play it on our PC. The video player VLC has the ability to play webm. Please add my vote to adding this to MM.

It would be nice if this could be back-ported to MM4. IIUC webm is just a variant of MKV container using VP9 video and Opus audio codecs. I'm more interested in managing in MM4 library rather than playback.
