Need help converting regular installation to portable

Post by 2mny »

I would like to convert my regular Media Monkey 4 installation into a portable version. I also want to keep as much of my configuration and database intact as possible. I have tried several times already but each time MM4 portable did not load my old database and did not retain config settings. Can anyone offer step-by-step instructions?

DB and ini are stored in the Portable folder inside the install folder of the Portable Install: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=17

@Lowlander

Have you successfully converted an install?

From what I can tell, lines in the ini need to be edited. for example in [system] you have

TempDir=C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\

portable installs also have a section in the ini like this:

[portable]
IsPortable=1

Conversion is not as simple as just installing in portable mode and copying .ini and .db files into the portable folder

I'm having the same problem, however I went from a portable install of MM3 to a portable MM4. I've copied the .ini file to the /portable folder, and still do not have any settings nor is it pointing to the previous DB location.

I'm wondering if i should just go with a fresh MM4 .ini so that there are no conflicting issues between the different versions.

Funny part is, I deleted the MM4 .ini, replaced it with my MM3 .ini; found that it didn't make a difference. Deleted the MM3 .ini, opened and closed MM4, hoping to find a fresh .ini, and now there's nothing in the /portable folder. Nothing in the c:\users\<username>\appdata\local\MediaMonkey directory either. I did choose a Portable install.

ini and DB should be in the \Portable folder in the folder you installed MediaMonkey Portable (this would be where MediaMonkey.exe is located). Be aware that installing in the Program Files folder is not recommended as Windows blocks write access not allowing MediaMonkey to write to .ini, .registry and .db files located there.

Yup, I did direct the install location to be on the portable drive. The MM4 .ini was there before replaced it with my MM3 .ini, which yielded no results (no settings, no database). I removed it, hoping for a fresh one to be made, and got nothing.

The MM4 .ini is now there after a fresh re-install. I checked the file to edit the path to point to my existing .db (in a different location), and can't find any path. Maybe because of the "portable" install?

Portable install by default looks in the \Portable folder for the database.

I was holding off on moving the db there because the existing db is synced with other programs for server and back-up purposes. I guess I should just migrate over.

How about MM3 settings carrying over? They seem to be non-existent. Is it recommended to just start fresh?

MediaMonkey 3 settings should carry over, but some of them are lost due to underlying changes in MediaMonkey.

This shouldn't be so complicated.

MediaMonket needs a BACKUP and RESTORE function, plain and simple.
This hokey-pokey to take control of your metadata is ridiculous.
