ok thats what i figured. so that brings me to another issue. i have 2 sd cards. one for my phone, one for my tablet. can i define separate device profiles and have them retain that data? it seems like it remembers whichever one i sync last as far as playlists, formats, conversion settings.

Where exactly? I went to set formats and checked everything and it is still failing as I stated in my original post. I want to disable it checking the format entirely and just sync what I want, I will worry about what will be compatible or not.

If I remove the SD card and put it in an SD card reader, it scans in about 15 minutes and let me sync up fine. I have had a very similar issue. If you go to the device in MM and browse the music folder you can see certain files there, but if you try to play them they will skip past and grey out.
I end up having to manually drag the music from my library onto the iphone and it will work.
