Sure, here are the steps:
- Launch MediaMonkey 4.1.25.1885
- Select any single MP3 file in MediaMonkey library
- Right click > Send to > <iPhone Name> (Synchronize)
- Quit MediaMonkey
- Launch iTunes 12.9.6.3
- "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone "<iPhone Name>". Go to the summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings."
- Quit iTunes
- Launch iFunbox 4.1 Build 4338.2105 (x64) [Downloaded from i-funbox website]
- Click "Toolbox" on left and click "User File System"
- In file system tree, navigate to "iTunes_Control/iTunes" and delete the following files: iTunesControl, iTunesCDB and iTunesPrefs
- Quit iFunbox
- Launch iTunes again
- iTunes recognizes device again, i.e., it doesn't show the error message and allows sync
- If I copy another file to it with MediaMonkey, the error message will come back in iTunes
