Questions for Spanish-Speaking users

I'll post what I did in Portuguese (Brazilian), so you can have an idea:

The Dutch translations went with Illustrations in other words Ilustraciones.

Some options
Zoom in: enfocar
Zoom out: alejar la imagen
Frame rate: velocidad de marco

Aspect ratio: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relaci%C3%B3n_de_aspecto is correct in other words

An update 7 years later.

Does anyone have any suggestions for "Artwork"? I've used just "Arte" though I've also though of "Ilustraciones" or "Imágenes". Neither option is very satisfying.

Hi! Your job looks really fine.
Some suggestions:

AutoPlaylist / Organizador de Lista de Reproducción

Library / Musiteca doesn't sound ok in Spanish. I would say either archivos de música or archivo

Preview / Vista Previa is ok for vissual items. Extracto is ok for songs.

Tray / Bandeja (yes, we use it for mussic)

Sleep / Apagado Programado, definitely.

Burn (a CD) / Grabar / In argentina we use Quemar but though Grabar was more universal.

Skin / Skin / I think most useres will recognize this rather than Piel or other options.

Sleep / Dormir / Sounds a bit unnatural but should be ok. Another option is Apagado Programado, or something like that.

You are encountering a specific problem that most people aren't as Spanish has many versions. Well all are the same Spanish, but the words commonly used change from country to country.

I downloaded iTunes in Spanish to compare (I've also used Windows Media before). After seeing this I love MM and my translation more than ever.

In general there's agreement between the terms they use and my translation. However, there's a tendence in most software translations to be overly literal, and this happens also in iTunes (though not as badly as in Windows Media). For instance, they use Artista for Artist, while I stand by my Intérprete.

Another mistake they have is they translate some technical words which most people know in English. For instance, they translate Stream as Secuencia... I had a hard time figuring what they were talking about

iTunes uses Canción (literally song) instead of track in almost all places. While Canción is more natural than the word i'm using for Track (Pista), a user can have audiobooks or other audio files for which the track word applies but song doesn't.

I did get some good ideas

. They use Puntuación for Rating, which I think is slightly better than my Calificación.

Last but not least, iTunes has a fraction of MM's functionality

, so many of the terms I have questions about don't appear there at all (nor in WM).

I hope to finish a reasonably tested translation by the end of the weekend...

Don't foget to check out other players in your local language as they might give a good idea about translations. This also would result in less confusion under users as different programs use the same terms.

Arg, thanks for your comments!! Looks like there aren't many Spanish speakers here

... hopefully once I get this translated there'll be more Spanish speaking MM users

I think that Catálogo is a very good idea. As Lowlander pointed out, Audioteca is inappropriate because MM can catalog Video files as well. Now I'm undecided between Audioteca and Catálogo. I'm deciding against Biblioteca because in Spanish it's strongly associated to books (see also my post in the French forum).

We don't have any word like Brano in Spanish. We do have a word like that in Argentinean Spanish, but I think it's not universal. So I'm sticking to Pista, which is not natural but is understandable to everybody.

I'm using Fijar for Dock... don't know if there's a similar italian word for this.

Sorry, the first reply to your questions comes from a non-spanish speaking user (even if I studied some Spanish a couple of years ago)...

I just started a topic called "Questions for Italian-speaking users" (not very original, huh?

). There might be words or comments that interest you (you should be able to read the Italian comments, otherwise just ask).

In particular I wanted to point out a few words, there might be Spanish equivalents:
- library: I choose 'catalogo', catalogue in English, but I'm now considering 'audioteca'
- track: I choose 'brano', a generic word to define a musical piece.
- artist: thanks for suggesting 'interprete'!
- dock: what did you choose? I couldn't find anything suitable...

Track!!! I'm using Pista. This is standard and hopefully understandable, but Pista is not a common use word. In Argentina we use Tema, this is very very close to Track, but I doubt is universal in the Spanish-speaking world. Let me know what you think.
